While 5G is in full swing across the world and the flagship smartphones are really attracting a lot of users, there are budget 5G smartphones as well and let us acknowledge the 5G chipsets that power them. You would already know that Android controls a majority of smartphones in the world and MediaTek and Qualcomm control a majority of Android smartphones.

Talking about 2021, MediaTek has ended the monopoly of Qualcomm and they are now competing for the top spot. While MediaTek is the top chipset manufacturer as of now, Qualcomm is doing really well with the flagships. And talking about budget segment, the chipsets producers are competing neck-to-neck with each other.

While MediaTek has brought the MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset as its lowest cost 5G smartphone chipset till now, there is Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset from Qualcomm.

And while these are the lowest cost 5G chipsets from the respective brands, a competition between them should be really interesting. Which smartphone chipset do you think is the best between these? Let us look at some of the major specifications to determine this:

AnTuTu 8 Scores:

If you trust the AnTuTu 8 benchmark scores, you need to know that while MediaTek Dimensity 700 scores 295k points on the points table, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset shows a score of 326k which is almost 11% percent better. Now this is something that you should keep in mind if you are a gamer. However, not many people believe the AnTuTu scores.

CPU Specs:

First of all, it is important to know that MediaTek Dimensity 700 is 7nm in size while Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 is 8nm in size which offers a slight advantage to the MediaTek chipset.

Besides, MediaTek Dimensity 700 has an octa-core structure with primary clock speed as high as 2.2GHz while Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset has an octa-core structure with clock speed around 2GHz. So, MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset is much better even in terms of average clock speed and the peak CPU clock speed.

Memory:

Both MediaTek Dimensity 700 and Snapdragon 480 are similar in terms of memory specs. They contain an LPDDR4X memory type with a primary clock speed of 2133MHz. However, the aspect where MediaTek Dimensity 700 takes a big lead is the max memory support size and while MediaTek Dimensity 700 can support up to 12GB internal memory, Snapdragon 480 can support only up to 8GB.

Multimedia and Connectivity:

The multimedia features of MediaTek Dimensity 700 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 are also quite similar, and they have the same maximum camera support as well. However, MediaTek Dimensity 700 shows a slight advantage in the quality of video it can capture and therefore, you can say that MediaTek Dimensity 700 is slightly better in the multimedia aspect as well.

As far as connectivity is concerned, while MediaTek Dimensity 700 has dual 5G SIM connectivity and better network speeds, Snapdragon 480 can support Wi-Fi 6 against just Wi-Fi 5 support in MediaTek Dimensity 700. However, both smartphone chipsets contain similar Bluetooth support.

So, if you look at the comparison, MediaTek Dimensity 700 appears a better option at the low cost. However, this is not the end of the world and the lower options from MediaTek are yet to come. You may soon see a MediaTek Dimensity 600 series that could target even lower cost. What are your views on this?
