While people have already parted ways with 4G and most of them are looking to use the powerful 5G smartphones, the search for the ultimate 5G chipset for the smartphones is up and about. You may think that Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset should be crowned as the ultimate winner, but as per me, it should be not, because of the following main reasons:

  • Firstly, Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset is extremely high in terms of its cost and it affects the overall cost of the smartphone as well.
  • Secondly, in spite of being extremely high in cost, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset cannot fully do away with heating issues and thus drains the battery quite a bit.

Due to these reasons, I hardly recommend Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset and in my list of favorites and the most powerful 5G chipsets, there are 2 strong competitors as headlined. While MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset offers really good features at a very small cost, Snapdragon 870 chipset too is equally powerful and does offer great value to the money it takes.

But which of these chipsets proves better than the other one? Here are some points of differences that you really need to consider when comparing these chipsets:

  • Starting with the CPU section, MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset has about 6.82 percent overall faster CPU clock speed. While it has an octa-core CPU where the cores of the chipset are clocked at 1 x 3GHz & 3 x 2.6GHz & 4 x 2GHz. Against this, Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset too has an octa-core CPU with a better primary clock speed, but the overall clock speed of the cores is 1 x 3.2 & 3 x 2.4 & 4 x 1.8GHz.
  • MediaTek Dimensity 1200 also has a higher RAM speed and this is almost double. While the RAM clock speed of MediaTek Dimensity 1200 is 4266MHz, for Snapdragon 870, it is 2750MHz and this is about 1516MHz higher in the Mediatek chipset.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset has a better version of DDR Memory support. DDR (Double Data Rate) memory is the most common type of RAM. Newer versions of DDR memory support higher maximum speeds and are more energy-efficient. While Snapdragon 870 supports DDR5 type memory, MediaTek Dimensity 1200 can support only up to DDR4.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 supports better upload and download speeds in the smartphones. As compared to MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset, it has about 1.6 times faster download speed and about 20 percent faster upload speed.
  • MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset has a slightly better chipset size. It is fabricated with the help of 6nm chipset technology while Snapdragon 870 chipset has been fabricated on 7nm technology and you already might know that a smaller chipset is much better in power and in saving power.
  • MediaTek Dimensity 1200 also has several technologies such as Heterogeneous Multi-Processing (HMP) and AVX which is used to help speed up calculations in multimedia, scientific and financial apps.

Besides these, almost all the features of these two chipsets are similar and there is not much difference. However, viewing the above differences and the cost difference between the two chipsets, I think MediaTek Dimensity 1200 does a much better job for the users in their smartphones against Snapdragon 870 chipset. What do you think?
